Information for Incoming Students
General Information
The Student Service Center provides detailed information for incoming students. Regarding the Covid pandemic you can find the detailed information of the University of Freiburg.
German University Culture
Please not that at our semester dates and teachings periods largely deviate from other European universities. While the winter semester starts end of October, the Summer semester starts end of April. Notice also that exams are written February/March and September. Please contact us in case these schedules interfere with your home university schedules.
According to German traditions a lecture „Vorlesung“ is always accompanied with an exercise „Übung“. You only get the ECTS of the full course if you take both. Sometimes there is a minimum amount of solutions you have to submit in order to participate in the exam. We have also seminars, lab courses, practical courses, projects and (bachelor/master) theses as possible items you can choose from. These come without exercises. For projects and theses you have to get into contact with a professor of a chair in order to be accepted. Please treat this like a job interview, since it is not uncommon that students are rejected, if they do not have basic knowledge for beginning this course. Ask for projects, bachelor theses, master theses as soon as possible directly at the professor of the chair you are interested.
Getting Courses and Grades
Please register in the online system as a foreign student. Then, it should be possible to subscribe in the electronic campus system. In case a course is not appearing for you, please contact the examination office. Usually, the course was simply forgotten to be made available for foreign students. In case of problems contact us (see addresses below). Try to register online for your courses as soon as possible (i.e. if you have your online access). If it is not possible, contact the lecturer via e-mail and inform him/her about your desire to take part in that course. If there are any problems, let us know. You have to register extra for the exam (around January and June). Do not forget this!
